Florida Biotech and Research Parks

Overview: There are three regional pockets of biotech and research park development in Florida: (1) Orlando - Burnham Institute for Medical Research; (2) Port St. Lucie - Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies; (3) Jupiter - Scripps Institute.

Scripps Institute - Palm Beach County - A state-of-the-art biomedical research institute located in Jupiter, Florida (Palm Beach County) on the campus of Florida Atlantic University (FAU).  Researchers at Scripps Florida focus on basic biomedical science, drug discovery, and the application of the latest research technology to the drug discovery process.  Currently more than 170 researchers and support staff are working in two temporary facilities (74,000 square feet of lab space) on FAU. Expansion into a 350,000 square foot, three-building permanent complex is projected for early 2009.  Read More About Scripps Florida - Click Here

Torrey Pines - St. Lucie County - In 2006, Dr. Houghten and the Torrey Pines Institute embarked on expansion into the State of Florida. It all started with a phone call from Governor Jeb Bush and the wheels were put into motion. This endeavor was made possible through the support of the State of Florida through the Innovation Incentive Fund, the City of Port St. Lucie, Core Communities, the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County, Florida Atlantic University, and St. Lucie County. Torrey Pines Institute in Florida will be housed in temporary labs and offices until the 104,000 square foot green-certified building is completed at the Florida Center for Innovation in Tradition at the end of 2008. Currently, the Institute has 20 employees researching new methods for drug discovery and pain management.

Burnham Institute - Orlando - Burnham is building the Institute’s new facility at Lake Nona, Orlando. It is a 600-acre Science & Technology Park. Burnham Institute and the University of Central Florida College of Medicine will serve as cornerstone elements of the budding cluster, which, when complete, is projected to have a potential economic impact of billions of dollars and generate thousands of jobs in the next ten years, according to a Milken Institute study. Lake Nona’s Science & Technology Park is also the preferred site for the Orlando Veterans Affairs Hospital and the Nemours Orlando Children’s Hospital and Research Campus.   Read More About Burnham's Orlando Park - Click Here
